Winter Feeding

There are many ways to feed bees over the winter. I have tryed most of them and the one way that I like the best for my operation is a way that Jennifer Berry from UGA Bee Lab showed me.

The process is very simple. All's you need is 1 gal. Ziploc Baggies and an empty super box.

First make up your winter mix. For the winter feedin you will want to use a 2:1 mix of sugar to water. That will be about 10 lbs. sugar to 1 gal. water. Heat your 1 gal. of water to just before boil and add your sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely desolved. Let your mix cool.

Now that your mix is cool, open your 1 gal. baggie and pour mix until the baggie is just about 3/4 full. Seal baggie with zip. Get a SHARP knife and a empty super box and you are ready to head out to your bee hive.

Once out at the bee hive, remove the top cover and inner cover. All honey supers should already bee removed. You should bee looking at the top bars of your frames now. Get the Ziploc baggie full of feed and lay it on the frames with the word Ziploc looking up at you. In the center belly of the baggie cut a 11/2-2 inch slice in the baggie. The mix should not run out. If you have a air bubble in the baggie push on the baggie alittle for the bubble to vent out. The bees will come up and find the mix very fast.

Now take the empty super box and put it on the hive. This will give the mix a space so you can cover your hive. Once you have the super box on install your inner cove and top cover. About once a week pop your top to see if the bees have taken all of the feed. When they have just make up another baggie and place it right on top of the old one.
